2011, February: Workshop on administration of pesticide registration system

In February 2011, the APHRD and Alterra organized a workshop on the administration of the Ethiopian pesticide registration system. The main objective of the workshop was to evaluate the existing pesticide registration procedures in Ethiopia, and to make proposals for further strengthening of the process under the new law.

The workshop was attended by relevant staff from APHRD and by staff from the Netherlands? Board for the Registration of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) and Alterra.

The workshop focused on options for strengthening the administrative, legal and organizational side of the registration process, based on lessons learned in Ethiopia and in the Netherlands, and the requirements of the new legislation. Detailed work flow charts were established for all steps of the pesticide registration process, and strengths, weaknesses and gaps identified.

Among the activities that will be further developed under the PRRP - Ethiopia are:

  • The establishment of a new MoA web page for pesticide registration in Ethiopia,
  • containing information on, for instance, authorized pesticides and their uses and guidance to applicants on how to submit a registration dossier to the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • The development of a new computer programme at APHRD to facilitate the management of pesticide registration applications and improve services to clients.
  • Further definition of procedures and data requirements for different types of registration, such as the authorization of generic pesticides or of minor use products.
  • Strengthening of the technical and scientific evaluation of registration dossiers, to improve the assessment of the efficacy of new pesticide products and their health and environmental risks under Ethiopian conditions.
